Press Release Summary: Dr. Schulhof explains the importance of knowing your doctor before considering facial injectables.
Press Release Body: In this beauty-oriented society that puts a premium on looking young and wrinkle-free, women are turning to wherever they can for facial enhancement. Creams, injectable fillers, and other botox-like products are flooding the market and we\'ve seen an increase in healthcare practitioners who are trying to carve themselves a portion of this booming business. But \"let the buyer beware\", warns Dr. Zev Schulhof DMD, MD of the Center for Facial Aesthetic Surgery in Teaneck NJ. In his recently published article in the International Journal of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, he tells of a 46 year old female, looking for some facial rejuvenation, who was treated with an injectable filler by her doctor. She was told by her physician that the filler was made up of \"special vitamins.\" Over the next five years, her face began to harden and become lumpy and distorted. Soon she was feeling constant pain in her face and was unable to sleep at night. After visiting many plastic surgeons and dermatologists who offered no help, she was referred to Dr. Schulhof and his colleague at Mount Sinai Medical Center. A biopsy showed that she had been injected with non-medical grade silicone. \"We are assuming that she was injected with a material similar to what you would use to caulk your bathtub\" says Dr. Schulhof. \"These foreign bodies in here face were causing painful inflammatory reactions and distorting the shape of her face.\" \"The main challenge in reconstructing her face\" explains Dr. Schulhof \"was that the silicone was distributed throughout all the layers of her facial skin, muscle and fatty tissue. After hours of tedious surgery, being careful not to damage the nerves and blood vessels of the face, Dr Schulhof and his team were able to remove a good portion of the silicone. At a subsequent surgery her face was re-sculpted using the patient\'s own fat from her abdomen. \"The lesson to be learned\", explains Dr. Schulhof , \"is beware of ads that offer bargain basement prices for cosmetic surgery.\" \"You usually do get what you paid for!\" says Dr. Schulholf. \"And above all else, make sure your doctor is well trained in facial cosmetics and board certified in his or her specialty,\" he concluded.
